Safety Manager

Your Impact

Alpha-9 is seeking a Safety Manager to join our Vancouver team to support our radiation safety, environmental, health, and biological safety function. The ideal candidate will be a multi-tasker who will provide hands-on safety support, emergency support, and administrative support for the diverse safety program at our facilities. The candidate will be responsible for accurate and timely completion of all safety requirements. This position requires registration as the Alternate RSO in accordance with CNSC regulations, as well as embracing all daily radiation safety operations.

How You’ll Contribute

  • Work closely with the RSO to maintain a safe working environment
  • Support tracking of SOPs, radiation receipt, radiation detector calibrations, radiation inventory, disposal records, and any other necessary documentation.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance related to provincial and national radiation, biological, environmental, and occupational safety hazards across Alpha-9’s facilities.
  • Engage and coordinate service vendors and suppliers of safety equipment.
  • Act as a liaison between dedicated teams of radiation users, RSO, EHS manager and BSO.
  • Assist with receipt and preparation of controlled radioactive, chemical and biological substances.
  • Support all safety programs, such as WSBC requirements, and Joint Health and Safety Committee initiatives.

 

The Skills You Bring

  • B.S. or M.S. in physical or biological sciences, or a related discipline with 3+ of experience handling unsealed radioactive sources.
  • Experience with radiation safety inspections, and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission administrative and operating protocols.
  • Experience preparing and receiving radioactive packages.
  • Solid understanding in maintaining and updating standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Proficiency in MS Office, including Word, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and communication skills to foster collaboration across teams.

Associate Scientist II, in vivo Pharmacology

Your Impact

Alpha-9 Oncology is seeking a highly motivated Associate Scientist with hands-on experience working with murine cancer models to join our innovative in vivo group within the Translational Biology team. This position is centered on the execution of in vivo studies—including animal handling, dosing, monitoring, and tissue collection—to support the preclinical evaluation of radiopharmaceuticals.

In this lab-based role, you’ll contribute directly to study execution and daily operations, working closely with our Translational team that includes vitro biology and in vivo to ensure high-quality data and seamless collaboration. While this role plays an important part in our broader discovery efforts, the primary focus is hands-on animal work rather than strategic program leadership or drug development planning.

This is a great opportunity for someone who is passionate about working directly with animal models and eager to build meaningful experience in a dynamic, translational research environment.

How You’ll Contribute

  • Provide compassionate care for laboratory animals in collaboration with the husbandry animal technicians to ensure animal monitoring and health, behavior, and welfare surveillance in accordance with CCAC guidelines.
  • Support the Translational Biology in vivo group with animal handling, restraints, injections, surgery, post-operative care, blood sampling and tissue collection. 
  • Participate in lab management tasks including but not limited to tracking and stocking inventories, ordering consumables, maintenance and calibration of equipment.
  • Coordinate with the rest in vitro group for efficient workflow regarding cell injections.
  • Maintain clear and accurate lab records (e.g., monitoring sheets, health reports, data spreadsheets) and communicate any observed abnormalities in a timely manner.
  • Assist in SOP writing and maintenance/certification schedule for equipment. 
  • Perform other related activities within the Translational Biology in vivo group as needed.

The Skills You Bring

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biology or a related field.
  • Minimum of 1 year of industry experience, including hands-on work with murine models, particularly immunodeficient mice.
  • Familiarity with laboratory animal care standards and Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) guidelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work safely within a laboratory environment.
  • Experience with radiopharmaceuticals is an asset, though not required.
  • Excellent observational skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Highly organized with solid documentation and record-keeping practices.
  • Effective communicator with the ability to convey information clearly across teams.
  • Strong team player with a collaborative mindset.

Scientist I, Tx Radiochemistry CMC

Alpha-9 Oncology is seeking a highly motivated Scientist, Tx CMC Radiochemistry with a strong background in radiolabeling process development, drug product formulation, and analytical method development to join our innovative CMC team. In this role, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including Process Chemistry, Analytical Development, External Manufacturing, and Translational Research, to drive the development and delivery of targeted peptide- and small molecule-based radiopharmaceuticals for both diagnostic and therapeutic use. You’ll have the chance to make a real impact on our mission while enjoying a dynamic work environment that fosters learning and career progression.

Reporting to the Associate Director, CMC Operations, you will play a key role in shaping our radiochemistry platform and supporting the advancement of novel radiolabeled compounds into preclinical and clinical development. This includes contributing to technology transfer efforts with CDMO partners and helping to establish new lab capabilities. This role is based in our Vancouver office.

How You’ll Contribute

  • Conduct radiochemistry experiments leading to robust radiolabeling processes and clinical formulations that meet target product and stability profiles for therapeutic applications.
  • Design and conduct experiments, critically evaluate data, draw appropriate conclusions and develop follow-up plan of action to determine critical process parameters and establish process ranges.
  • Develop technology transfer package for transfer of radiolabeling and analytical methods to third party CRO and CDMO partners and serve as a representative on a project team in the capacity of process chemist expert.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to define development project goals and timelines.
  • Support CDMO investigations by troubleshooting and identifying unusual results and designing experiments that establish root cause and/or enhance knowledge of the product being developed.
  • Author, revise and review technical documents including SOPs, development reports, test methods, experimental and qualification protocols, batch records, specifications and regulatory documents. Provide project data and progress status updates to internal cross-functional project team
  • Recommend and implement continuous improvements with respect to safe handling of radioactive substances in the laboratory environment according to applicable Nuclear Safety Regulations (Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission).
  • Adhere and follow radiation safety regulations as set in the policies and conduct area radiation surveys, contamination control, radioactive waste management.
  • Ensures compliance with Health and Safety, policies, procedures and regulations applicable to the work.
  • Conduct work according to best practices and where appropriate, regulatory guidance, international pharmacopeias, ICH, established protocols and standard operating procedures.

The Skills you Bring

  • Ph.D. in Radiochemistry, Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field with a minimum of 1–2 years of relevant industry or postdoctoral experience; or M.Sc. with at least 6 years of experience in radiopharmaceutical process development, formulation, production, or technology transfer in academic and/or commercial settings.
  • Hands on experience in radiolabeling with radioisotopes used in therapeutic applications (e.g., Lu-177 and Ac-225).
  • Ability to plan and execute complex scientific projects. Strong analytical and trouble shooting skills.
  • Ability to handle more than one project at a time, multitasking, effective communicator and collaborative with different teams.
  • Functional knowledge of radiopharmaceutical process/formulation chemistry, standard concepts of radiochemistry, best practices, regulatory requirements for development of radiopharmaceuticals in various jurisdiction.

How You’ll Contribute

  • Conduct radiochemistry experiments and develop manual or automated radiolabeling processes to deliver robust clinical formulations that meet diagnostic product profiles.
  • Design and execute experiments, critically analyze data, troubleshoot technical issues, and perform follow-up studies to support process development and problem-solving.
  • Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and represent radiochemistry in project discussions to drive development goals, timelines, and decision-making.
  • Develop analytical methods, QC procedures, and technology transfer packages to support CDMO/CRO partnerships and ensure process scalability.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives in both process optimization and the safe handling of radioactive materials in accordance with Nuclear Safety Regulations (e.g., CNSC).
  • Participate in investigations of out-of-specification results or synthesis failures and contribute to root cause analysis and knowledge building.

The Skills you Bring

  • PhD in Radiochemistry, Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field with 1+ years of experience, or MSc with 4+ years, in radiopharmaceutical process development, formulation, manufacturing, or tech transfer.
  • Hands-on experience in radiolabeling for diagnostic and therapeutic applications; experience with isotopes such as Ga-68, F-18, Cu-64, and In-111 is a plus.
  • Experience developing automated radiolabeling methods, including design for GMP manufacturing of radiolabeled drug products.
  • Proficiency in analytical techniques such as HPLC, radio-HPLC, radio-TLC, and other QC methods relevant to radiopharmaceutical production.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to lead and execute complex scientific projects independently.
  • Effective communicator with strong project management skills and experience collaborating in cross-functional teams including QA, regulatory, R&D, and operations.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements for radiopharmaceutical development and manufacturing across jurisdictions, with experience supporting CMC documentation.
